Chapter Overview

Musical Empowerment at NC State serves children in the Raleigh area whose families would not otherwise have access to music lessons. NC State students are paired with elementary, middle, and high school age children for free weekly, 40 minute, one-on-one music lessons and mentorship. Our program provides free instruments, music books, teacher workshops, and trainings to participants, as well as any other resources that may improve the quality and value of lessons. Lessons take place at Trinity Lutheran Church in Raleigh, local schools, and afterschool programs. Our program is constantly growing and evolving. We accept applications throughout the Fall and Spring semesters for both teachers and families. Please see below for more information about getting involved. We would love to connect with you!

Chapter History
Our chapter began teaching lessons during the 2015-2016 academic year, so this will be our fifth year of maintaining music mentorship and instrument lending programs. We have recently started to experience growth in our numbers of student-teacher pairs, but strive to retain the small-group ‘feel’ as we expand. Our past senior co-presidents, Alex Kim (class of 2017) and Shane Reagan (class of 2018), stay involved as members of our local Board of Directors. Alex was our chapter’s founder and serves as our board chairman.

Most of our teachers still partner with families from Fred A Olds elementary school, where all of our original students were enrolled. In the 2017-2018 academic year, we had the unique privilege of developing a relationship with Wiley International Studies Magnet Elementary School, partnering with families who were involved in the Alexander Family YMCA’s Y-Learning program. We intend to continue to develop our relationship with Olds and Wiley as we expand to additional schools!
