Meet our new Executive Director, Kelley Downey!

You’re here because you stand behind our mission! You might play music (you certainly listen to it) and you feel that one-on-one music instruction for low income students is inspiring. Meet Kelley Downey, like you, she stands behind our mission to make music mentorship more accessible. We welcome Kelley to our Musical Empowerment Family as she takes on the role of Executive Director. Originally from rural NY, she has been a Carolina girl since graduating from Clemson University in 2005. Kelley’s Graphic Communications degree prepared her for a well-rounded background in business development and her life-long volunteer experiences helped her to discover her strengths in community building.

Kelley has 3 children (ages 5, 8, and 9) and is passionate about the importance of music education for brain development, social/emotional well- being, and appreciation for the arts. When not working, she enjoys going on adventures with her family, being outdoors and discovering new music. We sat down with Kelley for a quick Q&A:

What’s your favorite instrument to play?

I grew up playing the clarinet and got picked on when I first started because of all of the squeaks and squawks. I’d still love to take drum lessons!

What is your favorite food?

I’m a big fan of coffee in the morning, popcorn at night, and chocolate anytime!

What makes you excited about working for Musical Empowerment?

I’m thrilled to join the ME team; This group of kind hearts and sparkling personalities has been incredibly welcoming. I’m excited to connect with more of YOU - our supporters, chapter members, community leaders, students and their families!

What advice do you have for someone learning an instrument?

My kids hear this a lot: When you get frustrated, it means that your brain is growing! Be patient with yourself!

Thanks, Kelley! We’d love to hear from the rest of you, do you have questions for Kelley or about our mission at Musical Empowerment?
