This is the story of Olga Melgar, an immigrant to the United States from El Salvador, and her son, Manuel (12). Currently a waitress at K&W, Olga works long hours to provide for her children and create avenues by which they can become successful in navigating the American economy. One such means of doing this for Manuel was signing him up for Musical Empowerment, a nonprofit that provides free music lessons and mentorship to children in under-served communities. Manuel has learned to play the violin from his teacher, Hunter, as a means of self expression and a tool by which he can explore a culture apart from one he inherited. She dreams for him to embrace the world before him. This is a story about the first step.
